about

“Move the dial 1% / A hundred years for an inch.” Year after year, generation after generation, the same social and political fights rage on with little or no progress to show for it. Every now and then something or someone rattles the slow order and those events raise some optimism and gratitude…but it always seems like too little too late. It’s frustrating, scary and sad to think of the world we’ve left for children, and I ponder if we’ve done enough for them, how things are for them, and if there is hope. It's amazing how fast technology has accelerated in juxtaposition with the slow moving world. In fact, technology might be making things worse by distracting us, dividing us and creating mistrust. While the song brings to light many problems we continue to face, it has an exciting inspirational feel to it. Musically, this was influenced by early Radiohead and U2. There is also a nod to Drive by REM at the end of the song.

lyrics

Hey There Kids
How’s it goin
What’s it like in Catholic School now

How’s the heat
How’s the cold
California doesn’t seem great

Move the dial
One percent
A hundred years
For an inch

Hey There Kids
Is there hope
Do you even understand it

Too much sweet
Too much now
Too much everything is spelled out

So advanced
But we are sold
Burning eyes
On magic phones

With our eyes divided
All the trust is gone
And the fight keeps ragin
But the status quo
Changes come way too slow

Hey There Kids
How’s it goin
Did you hear the statues fell hard

A Holiday
Name must change
No more glorifying rapists

Move the dial
One percent
A hundred years
For an inch

With our eyes decided
All the trust is gone
And the fight keeps ragin
But the status quo
Changes come way too slow

Way too slow
Way too slow
Way too slow
Way too slow
Way too slow
Way too slow

Hey There Kids
Rock’n’Roll
Michael Stipe has gotten too old

So who will lead
The Artist War
To run the bankers out of New York
